As a national coalition of data archives, RDNL promotes the sustainable archiving and reuse of research data

Who are we?

About Research Data Netherlands

Research Data Netherlands (RDNL) is a national coalition of data archives whose mission is to promote the sustainable archiving and reuse of research data. The coalition was founded in 2013 by 4TU.ResearchData and Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) and was strengthened by SURF in September 2014.

RDNL consists of organizations that primarily perform back-office and technical basic infrastructure functions and that meet the guidelines of the CoreTrustSeal. The coalition is open to other organizations that are committed to data stewardship and meet these requirements, or are willing to meet them within a set period of time.

A unified back office

The RDNL mission is to promote sustainable accessibility and responsible reuse of scientific research data in all phases of (scientific) research. To this end, RDNL exchanges knowledge and provides services in the field of data management and long-term data preservation. In the near future RDNL also wants to offer services in the field of software sustainability.

The partners of RDNL fulfill a back office function in the process of data authorization, i.e. they take care of the sustainable archiving of research data they receive. The so-called front offices (e.g. university libraries) are in direct contact with the researcher and can ensure that the research data is stored in one of the archives. This makes the research data accessible and available for reuse in the long term.

By combining knowledge, skills and goals of RDNL’s partners, a powerful back office is formed that can efficiently serve the front offices. The front offices and other parties, such as providers of the technical infrastructure, benefit from a national expertise center that can be accessed through a single point of contact: your partner in research data curation.

Quality mark required

The data archives affiliated with RDNL all have at least a CoreTrustSeal or a comparable quality mark. This quality requirement emphasizes the core of the shared mission of the participating parties and of the coalition as a whole: to promote sustainable archiving and reuse of research data.
