For the last 5 years Research Data Netherlands (RDNL) has offered the course ‘Essentials 4 Data Support’, an introductory course for those who (want to) support researchers in storing, managing, archiving and sharing their research data.

Research Data Netherlands is an alliance between 4TU.Centre for Research Data, Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) and SURFsara. With this coalition, also open to other parties, the three data archives join forces in the area of long-term data archiving.

Essentials 4 Data Support has taken place 3 times a year over the past 5 years. We are be proud of the fact that during this period we have educated more than 300 data management supporters. While the majority of the data management supporters are based in the Netherlands the course is offered in English as well as in Dutch.

The majority of students are library staff who work as information specialists. We have, however, also trained policy advisors and ICT specialists. Students originate from various institutions including universities, technical colleges and universities of applied sciences and other national research institutions. They come from all over The Netherlands and are active in different fields of research. Academic hospitals, for instance, are increasingly sending staff to the course in anticipation of the growing demand for, and central role of, research data management practices.

International staff have also taken part in the course. Colleagues have travelled from Spain and Italy to participate. Currently, we are talking with students from Indonesia to adapt the course for their needs. In 2016, two coaches provided an in-house training for Danish universities. Also in-house trainings for Dutch colleges have been provided.

We are using the 2019 summer break to update the Essentials 4 Data Support course. In recent years the developments have been moved fast. The updated course will include more topics on technical developments, legal issues and overarching topics like FAIR, EOSC and references to applied and recommended literature. We are now working very hard to get everything ready before the next course starts. Registration is still open!

Reminder: The MOOC Delivering Research Data Management Services starts officially on the 2nd of September 2019
